“Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely”- Term Limit Analysis, by Michael Oreto
Posted: November 3, 2009, 4:19PMWhether you are focused on local, state or national politics, there is one inescapable fact: The politics of re-election, of obtaining and holding power over years and sometimes lifetimes is destroying this country. No matter what you read, hear or see in the political arena, all political statements and positions are shaded by one simple fact: Those in office, those in power want to retain their positions of power and will do almost anything to make that happen. The old adage “Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely” is a truth that nobody will question. But, do we not also understand that any power has a tendency to corrupt?
Once elected to office, even men and women with the best of intentions become enamored with the subtle and not so subtle emotional and oft times monetary satisfaction received from the mantle of power. How many politicians have campaigned on a platform of term limits and promised to stay for only one term? Why would they campaign on that issue if they didn’t recognize the challenge facing entrenched politicians? How many have been elected on that platform and have chosen not to keep that promise? Indeed, how many try to even change existing term limit laws to keep from stepping down?
Can there be any question that it is part of our human nature to want and seek power? It is evident in every aspect of life. From the best intentions of a Father or Mother interacting within their immediate family to the most powerful position in the world the President of the United States. NO ONE IS EXEMPT.
Term limits is the single most important reform need in our political system today. The only real argument I have heard against term limits is that policies and procedures in the political arena are too complicated for a mass of newly elected officials to be effective. I say that is one of the best arguments FOR Term Limits. Much of the policies and procedures of political office is designed so that incumbents have an unfair advantage over the average person interested in public service. Would there be chaos if term limits were the rule instead of the exception? Yes, but it would be the chaos of house cleaning. House cleaning that is long overdue. If a policy of term limits were established, those newly elected public servants would soon strip the convoluted and excessively complicated procedures from the process of governance and get down to the work of representing their constituents and keeping the good of the people in mind when debating the issues.
What of the vast numbers of appointees that may be affected you may ask? What about them? They are public servants too. Those who are effective would be retained and those who are not would be released, because the elected official would not need to build a power base from which to launch a re-election campaign.
Imagine how the man or woman who represents you now would behave if they didn’t have to worry about how their positions and votes on the issues would be perceived by powerful special interests? Those special interests groups who wield such power over our representatives now would lose their leverage, because hard decisions could be made without the specter of “re-election” hanging over their heads. Our representatives would finally feel free to take positions and pass laws for the common good.
Oh, I hear the cries of foul as I type. How dare you assume that my representative, an esteemed politician, is not a person of conscience, a person of integrity? As I have already stated, who among them can say they are not and never have been influenced by the power that comes with elected or appointed office. I say, “Elected officials are there to serve those they represent”. And, that duty cannot be done to the best of their ability if they must take into consideration their own re-election or the re-election of those in their political party.
I am not so naive as to think that term limits is a panacea for all our political problems. It is NOT. But, it is a giant step in the right direction for our country. There are numerous problems and plenty of blame to go around for the shape we are now in. Many examples of sincere and honest caring for the American people exist within our political spectrum. But, they are vastly overshadowed by the callous and self-important behavior of our entrenched politicians. Term limits can give our sometimes weak and always-imperfect politicians the cover they need to DO THE RIGHT THING as framed by those they represent and the American people at large.
I am just a regular person. One who loves this country and it’s citizens. I have watched silent and with a heavy heart as our country has grown weaker and more divided by those who represent us. They have, as a group, failed to instill confidence and trust in a vast majority of the American people. I am not alone in this. What I think and some cash will get you a soft drink at a convenience store. But, after much consideration, I feel I am right about this.

All of you Republican conservatives need to realize for obvious reasons that you lost the power you so love to have. I'm calling all of you and you're leaders out for being truly unAmerican. We all know that you have a problem with greed. All of the republican politicians are in the pocket of the health insurance industry. They do ask for you're vote, but then take loads of money over the concerns of the American people. Putting there lives in jeopardy. It's the republican conservatives that are causing the manslaughter in this country. I think if one more person in the USA dies for lack of health insurance we should charge those people in the government responsible with manslaughter. Because they are all guilty.
Your ignorance is quite telling. Nobody dies for lack of health insurance in this country. Our PRIVILEGE not RIGHT to health care coverage is monetary, not clinical. Let me ask you, why would someone die without health care? Health care is NEVER denied in the ER. You're entitlement mentality is the problem. Liberals "hate" Big Insurance, Big Pharma, Big everything. People don't die when they don't have Health Insurance, but they will die when the Pharmaceutical companies calls it quits on breakthrough medical research, doctors vanish, and hospitals turn into chicken farms like in third world nations. National Health Care rationing will kill, under your definition of it, more people then those without insurance now.
When you realize how good you have it, sir, will be the day that you realize just how senseless your post was.
Chuck Rahi
Your ignorance is obvious. They do die from lack of care and you repukes surround yourself with the Constitution and the flag and think that that gives you the rite to be evil to the hardworking taxpayers. If you had you're way there would be no Social security, no Medicare, nothing for the hardworking taxpayers in this country, But as two faced all of you are, you would give all rights to Big business, and let them with you're help screw everything up when you do have power. You do it every time, Try to destroy everything that is great about America. They should stop wining and get some good work done. But I don't think that is possible with those lousy money grubbing republicans. About how good I have it, Yea now that the Democrat's and Pres. Obama are in power. HA
"hospitals turn into chicken farms like in third world nations"
now that is ignorant statment!
Health care insurance companies already ration care and way to much.
This year the Democrats surpassed the Republicans as the most wealthiest in Congress. And you're exactly right. The Democrats AND Obama are in power in these horrible times. 10.2 unemployment and rising. Multi-trillion dollar deficit and growing. I want you liberals to shout as loud as you can, WE ARE OVERSEEING AND CREATING THIS MESS!
I've been in the Pharmaceutical and healthcare industry for 19 years. You, sir, are ignorant. The pharmaceutical industry spends billions of dollars a year in indigent programs, giving elderly and anyone without insurance free medication. We spend millions and millions on free samples. Greed, entitlement and just outright miserable liberals like yourself are too blind to see the good in this country.
It's all gimme, gimme, gimme. Well, Obama is giving and giving and giving and the only he can do that is to take from those who worked hard for it. Stealing is illegal accept when the government does it I guess.
The multi-trillion dollar deficit and growing.
Unemployment and rising.
Stealing is illegal.
The last 8 years:
Were the worst years of this countries life. The republican party is on it's way out!
No, you, sir, are ignorant. As well as a liar.
Bill, tell me why you think the last 8 years were the worst in this countries "life?" I think I've been fair to support all my opinions with hundreds of examples. Tell me why? Be specific to support such a charge, otherwise it's obvious you are lying.
ALL of the bad is the result of the last 8 years!
Details. Or I can say, the last 8 years, not counting Obama's disasterous 1st year, were some of the best economic times in our countries history. One example. A record 52 straight months of GDP growth creating over 3.8 million jobs in 6 years. 4.6 record unemployment. Healthy DOW peaking at 14,400. Just some. Great years.
Are you kidding? Are you blind. Have you been in the USA lately.
1. Bush started his term with republicans in charge were left with a big a surplus. But left office in deficit.
2. The war in Iraq waged for personal reasons, rather than security reasons.
3. Deregulation, So that Big business can rip us off, and use the money to pay for republican votes.
You are rite about one thing, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely. Just look at the republican party, and what they have done to this country with their corrupt nature!
Prove it. Platitude talking points. For your information, Obama is the few liberal policies of Bush, X 10! This is Obama's America. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll prepare yourself for very hard times ahead. Bush has been gone for over a year! Get over him!
Just trying to fix what you're guy's screwed up. ALL of the current situation is the result of the last 8 years! talking points what about you saying:
One example. A record 52 straight months of GDP growth creating over 3.8 million jobs in 6 years. 4.6 record unemployment. Healthy DOW peaking at 14,400. Just some. Great years.
all talking points, and none of it is fact.
Was it worth letting the repukes and big business Screw all of us with smiles on their faces. You guys cooked the books to make things look the way you want it to. Just like spoiled rotten 6 year old children! If you don't get you're way you pitch a hissy fit, and don't want to play no more. Typical
conservative behavior.
Bill,
You said "stealing is illegal." Does that count not paying your taxes? How many people (Democrats) did Obama appoint or attempt to appoint to his administration that didn't pay their taxes? Let's see, #1 would have to be the Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, then there's Tom Daschle, Kathy Sebelius, Ron Kirk to name a few. Then of course there's Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-NY, the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee - which is responsible for changes to the tax code, who is in tax trouble.
It's interesting the Democrats are always the ones who want to raise taxes, but they seem to be the ones who don't pay them.
